What is Remedial Massage?

The difference between a Remedial and a Relaxation massage lies not only within the massage techniques but also within the assessment. A qualified Remedial Massage Therapist will assess your muscles by using a range of tests that may include but not limited to, Range of Motion test (ROM), Special Tests and a Functional Screening process. This will determine whether the discomfort is due to the muscles or another and what muscles need to be treated.

Why book a Remedial Massage?

Our body can present with points of pain and/or discomfort during our busy lives. Remedial massage can assist in releasing this pressure through the loosening of muscles, deactivating trigger points and loosen fascia. This is a great way to manage or prevent injury and other conditions.

When and how often should you get a Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is not the type of massage that you would get daily, as you generally are a little tender afterwards. In some cases, weekly Remedial massage is good to start for ongoing treatments but this should be moved to fortnightly soon after. The best way to prolong treatments is to listen to your therapist and the advice they give you, especially when it comes to stretches and foam rolling activities. The goal is to as quickly as possible create favourable conditions for the body to return to normal health.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is similar to remedial massage however the focus is slightly different. As Remedial massage is focused on facilitating healing to a specific area, sports massage is aimed at athletes preparing for an event and/or recovering after an event. Sports massage is also good for those who regularly train to keep their body in optimal condition for their chosen sport.

Why get a Sports Massage?

For the most part, sports massage is to maintain a good Range of Motion (ROM), however, there is a lot of other benefits to getting a regular massage if you train regularly or play sports. For example, Lowering the risk of injury; Increasing flexibility; Decreasing muscle tension and receiving a better night’s rest.

When and how often should you get a Sports Massage?

As a guide, if you train more than three days per week at high intensity then a fortnight massage would be beneficial for you. Whereas if you train five days or more per week, you may find that a weekly massage would benefit you better, however, this is on a person by person basis and there is no definite answer to how often you should get a massage. It comes down to a personal choice and this should be discussed with your therapist.

What is Relaxation Massage?

It’s all in the name, the sole purpose of a Relaxation massage is to help you relax through touch. This can be assisted by the use of Essential Oils. Most common treatment is a full body massage however the goal is to relax, and the therapist will follow your direction (pressure and location) to make this happen.

Why get a Relaxation Massage?

Relaxation massages doesn’t have the same benefits as a remedial or sports massage but it does have its own set of benefits for our bodies. A relaxation massage can achieve the following; the lowering of your blood pressure, it improves circulation throughout the body, assists in the reduction of stress, gives relief to anxiety and muscle tension relieved throughout the body and/or in particular areas. Oh, and did I also mention it is relaxing.

When and how often should you get a Relaxation Massage?

One of the best things about this style of massage is that there is no limit to its treatment. This style of massage is what you would expect daily on holidays and the best person to gauge the time between massages is you.

What is Cupping Massage?

Cupping is an alternative therapy where suction is created in a cup that is placed on the body. This can be achieved with either a pump or manual suction using a flame. One way to look at cupping is it being a negative force to the muscle whereas massage is a positive force. After a cupping session, some clients will be left with a bruise-like mark on their body, lasting up to 2 weeks before completely fading, however, there is no pain associated with them.

Why get a Cupping Massage?

Cupping may help to relax your muscles; it can boost your circulation around the body and for others, it just feels great and allows them to relax. Cupping is a great add-on to any massage treatment.

When and how often should you get a Cupping Massage?

Cupping should not be done over the same area where marks are still present, meaning that you can get your back cupped one day and the legs the next but you should not get your back done again until all the marks have completely faded away.

What is Kinesiology Taping?

Kinesiology taping more commonly known as K Taping has recently become a big trend, however, it has actually been around for some time. It was created by a chiropractor in the 1970s and its primary use is to reduce pain and add support to an area that requires it. Kinesiology tape is made of 100% cotton and acrylic adhesive this allows stretch, giving you support but not limiting and/or restricting your movement.

Why get Kinesiology Taping?

Kinesiology taping is used to aid in the recovery and/or can help your joints and muscles in a time of need. When applied after a massage, it may assist and minimise recovery time. You can also use Kinesiology tape before a sporting event to give you support but still allows you free movement during the activity and reduces the impact of the activity on the taped area.

When and how often should you get a Kinesiology taping?

Kinesiology tape can stay on the body for up to five days however my recommendation is that it stays on for three days and then on the fourth day it should be removed.  If you are using kinesiology tape to aid in activities such as sport; then the tape should be applied at least one hour before you start your activity.
